Measurement guide

How to Measure a Bench Cushion

Use this guide for benches, swings, gliders, and window seats. Most styles need three dimensions: Thickness, Width, and Depth. Identify your corner shape below before ordering.

Choose the cushion thickness

Select a thickness between 2 and 5 inches. If your bench has armrests, check that your chosen thickness does not raise your seated position above the armrest height — use the book method in the tips section to test first.

Step 2

Measure the width

Measure side to side across the full seating area of the bench frame.

Measure the frame, not your old cushion

Old cushions warp, compress, and stretch over time. Measuring them produces an inaccurate order. Always measure the bare wood or metal frame directly.

Step 3

Measure the depth

Measure from the front edge of the bench frame to the back rail or wall edge. For a swing or glider, measure the frame slats front to back, not the chain or hardware.

Identify your corner shape

Check your bench frame and select the option that matches:

Squared 90° on all four corners. Standard rectangle.
Rounded back corners Front corners square. Back corners rounded at 3" radius.
All corners rounded All four corners at 3" radius.
Rounded back Front squared. Back is a continuous curve.

Measuring tips

The book method

Stack books on the bench seat to simulate your chosen thickness. Check that the stack sits comfortably below the armrests before deciding on thickness.

Use a rigid tape measure

A steel retractable tape stays straight across long bench spans. Cloth tape stretches and will give you readings that are slightly too large.

Round to the nearest ½"

We produce cushions in ½" increments. Round each measurement to the nearest half-inch before entering dimensions at checkout.

Measure twice

Take each measurement twice and compare. If the readings differ, take a third and use the middle value.
