How to Measure Deep Seating Chair Cushions

Deep seating cushions come as a two-piece set — a separate seat cushion and back cushion. The back cushion sits on top of the seat cushion, which means you must subtract the seat thickness when calculating the back height. You need six measurements across both pieces.

Part A — Seat cushion

Step 1 — Start here

Choose the seat cushion thickness

Select a thickness between 2 and 6 inches. Write this number down — you will need it in Step 6 to calculate the correct back cushion height.

Step 2

Measure the seat width

Measure side to side across the widest point of the seat frame.

Measure the frame, not your old cushion

Old cushions compress and spread over time. Measuring them produces an oversized order. Always measure the bare wood or metal frame directly.

Step 3

Measure the seat depth

Measure from the front edge of the seat frame to the back rail. If the frame has a front lip, measure to the inside edge of that lip.

Part B — Back cushion

Step 4

Choose the back cushion thickness

Select a thickness between 2 and 6 inches. Back cushions are often ordered 1–2 inches thinner than the seat for a more relaxed, reclined feel.

Step 5

Measure the back width

Measure side to side across the back frame at its widest point. This is usually the same as the seat width, but measure independently to confirm.

Step 6 — Calculation required

Calculate the back cushion height

Because the back cushion rests on top of the seat cushion, it starts higher than the seat frame. If you order the full frame height, the back cushion will sit too high and push the seat cushion forward. You must subtract the seat thickness from the total frame height.

Back height (order) = Total frame height − Seat cushion thickness

Worked example

Your chair back frame measures 24" tall. You chose a 4" thick seat cushion in Step 1.

24" − 4" = Order a 20" back cushion height.

Measuring tips

Write Step 1 down first

The seat thickness from Step 1 is used again in Step 6. Note it before you start measuring the frame so you don't lose track.

Use a rigid tape measure

A steel retractable tape gives straight, consistent readings. Avoid soft tailor's tape — it sags and causes sizing errors across longer spans.

Round to the nearest ½"

We produce cushions in ½" increments. Round each measurement to the nearest half-inch before entering dimensions at checkout.

Measure twice

Take each measurement twice and compare. If the readings differ, take a third and use the middle value.
