Not all cushions are measured the same way. The construction style—Waterfall vs. Boxed Edge—determines where the tape measure goes. Understanding this ensures you get the look and comfort you expect.

1. Waterfall / Knife Edge

FLAT GUIDE (Board) Thickness Measured at Crown (Center)

Shape: Rounded (Convex)

Waterfall or Knife Edge cushions are rounded, getting thinner toward the edges. There is no side panel.

How It's Measured:

Thickness is measured at the Crown (Center), which is the highest point.

The Cardboard Trick: To measure accurately, lay a light piece of cardboard across the top to find the true peak, then measure the vertical distance from the bottom surface to the cardboard.

2. Boxed Edge

Thickness Seam to Seam (Gusset)

Shape: Flat Top & Bottom

Boxed Edge cushions have a distinct vertical side panel called a Gusset. This gives the cushion a structured, rectangular look.

How It's Measured:

Thickness is the Seam-to-Seam distance across the gusset.

Note: Decorative elements like welt (piping) or twist cord sit outside the measurement. Only the space between the stitch lines counts.

Measuring Tips

 Use Rigid Tools

Always use a carpenter's tape measure or ruler. Soft tailor's tape can wrap around curves, giving inaccurate height readings.

 Rounding Rules

Thickness on our site is adjustable in 1 inch increments. Please round your desired thickness to the nearest whole inch (e.g., 3", 4", 5").
