Why a Printed Cushion Beats a Character Bedspread

Walk into any big-box store and you'll find dinosaur bedspreads, superhero rugs, unicorn curtains. They come in fixed sizes, fixed colors, and fabric that pills after three washes. Worse: they're designed for standard twin beds and rectangular rooms. Your kid's reading nook, window bench, or built-in playroom seat? Not standard. Not even close.

A printed bench cushion solves two problems at once. First, it fits the actual bench (custom dimensions down to half-inch increments). Second, the design is whatever your child wants right now, not whatever a licensing deal put on a shelf this season.

The real advantage is longevity. A character bedspread gets replaced when your kid moves on from that character. Turning Your Child's Artwork into a Cushion

Can you print a kid's crayon drawing onto a bench cushion? Yes. And it's one of the most personal things you can put in a room.

Here's how to prepare the artwork for printing:

1. Scan or photograph the drawing. A flatbed scanner at 300 DPI gives the cleanest result. If you don't have a scanner, photograph the artwork in natural daylight, straight-on (no angle), with the paper flat. Art Fabrics recommends at least 150 DPI at final print size for fabric printing. For a 40-inch cushion, that means your image should be at least 6,000 pixels wide.
2. Clean up the background. If the drawing is on white paper, the white areas will show as the fabric's base color (clean white on our white-base fabrics). If there are notebook lines, shadows from the scan, or smudges outside the artwork, crop or erase them. Any free photo editor (Canva, Photopea) handles this in minutes.
3. Decide on layout. You have options: the drawing centered on the cushion with white space around it (like a framed piece), the drawing tiled into a repeating pattern (works for small doodles), or the drawing scaled up to fill edge-to-edge. We'll create a print layout diagram showing exact placement before production.
4. Upload or email. Use our custom print product page to upload directly, or email the file to support@uscushion.com with your bench dimensions. We'll send back a proof for approval.

Which Fabric Survives Kids?

Kids' rooms are hard on soft furnishings. Juice, markers, crumbs, shoes-still-on jumping. The fabric you choose matters more here than in any other room.

Outdoor fabric is the default recommendation for any kids' space. It's engineered for weather, which means it handles spills, stains, and daily wipe-downs without fading. Our Outdoor fabrics are tested to 5,000 cycles of abrasion resistance and rated anti-pilling grade 4+ (ISO 12945). That's overkill for a bedroom, which is exactly the point. You want the cushion to look the same after a year of daily use.

If your child's bench is a quiet reading nook (no food, no shoes, supervised use), Indoor fabric works fine and gives slightly more vivid print colors. Velvet gives the richest saturation for artwork prints, but it's not the right pick for a playroom where things get wiped down weekly.

If your kid eats snacks on the bench, choose Outdoor fabric and add a Velcro closure. Velcro lets you pull the cover off in seconds, toss it in the wash, and snap it back on. No fumbling with zippers while holding a juice-stained cover at arm's length.

If the bench is in a shared playroom with multiple kids, add 4 straps (+$4) and Beige anti-slip backing. Straps keep the cushion anchored when kids climb on and off. Anti-slip backing prevents the whole cushion from sliding on hardwood or laminate floors.

The Cover Swap Strategy: One Bench, Multiple Phases

Kids grow fast. The dinosaur phase lasts a year. The space phase lasts eight months. The "everything must be teal" phase shows up without warning.

Homes & Gardens recommends mixing pattern scales when combining kids' furniture with the rest of a room. If the cushion has a bold, large-scale dinosaur print, keep surrounding pillows and blankets in smaller-scale patterns or solids. The room stays playful without visual chaos.

Not for You If

• Your child is under 2. Bench cushions with straps and removable covers have small parts (strap buckles, zipper pulls, Velcro tabs). For toddler safety, consult your pediatrician about soft furnishing choices and supervise bench use. A standard non-removable cushion may be more appropriate for very young children.
