How to Measure for a Round Pet Bed
Round pet beds need two dimensions: Thickness and Diameter. The diameter is calculated from your pet's length — not measured from an existing bed.
Choose the cushion thickness
Select a thickness between 2 and 5 inches. For older pets or large breeds, 4 to 5 inches provides better joint support. For younger or smaller pets, 2 to 3 inches is typically sufficient.
Calculate the diameter
The diameter is the straight-line distance across the center of the circle. Rather than measuring an existing bed, calculate the right size from your pet's body length.
Diameter = Pet's length (nose to tail) + 8" to 12"
If your pet curls into a ball when sleeping, add 8". If they stretch out fully, add 12". When in doubt, go larger — pets rarely complain about extra space.
Example: A dog that measures 24" nose to tail and stretches out → order a 36" diameter bed.
Measuring tips
Round pet beds are made in 1" increments — not ½" like seat cushions. Round your calculated diameter to the nearest whole inch before entering it at checkout.
If checking an existing bed, pass the tape measure straight through the center point of the circle. Any off-center reading will give you a shorter, inaccurate diameter.
A steel retractable tape stays straight across large diameters. Soft tape curves and gives a reading that is too short for round surfaces.
A bed that is slightly too large is always preferable to one that is too small. If your calculation lands between two sizes, choose the larger diameter.
