How to Measure a Deep Seating Chaise Lounge Cushion

Chaise lounge cushions for deep seating come as a two-piece set — a separate seat pad and back pad. The back pad rests on top of the seat pad, so the back height requires a calculation. You need six measurements across both pieces.

Part A — Chaise seat

Step 1 — Start here

Choose the seat cushion thickness

Select a thickness between 2 and 5 inches. Write this number down — you will need it in Step 6 to calculate the correct back cushion height.

Check armrest clearance before choosing thickness

If your chaise has armrests, a thick cushion will raise your seated height and make the armrests feel too low. Use the book method below to test before deciding.

Step 2

Measure the seat width

Measure side to side across the widest point of the seat frame — the area you want covered. Measure the bare frame, not an existing cushion.

Step 3

Measure the seat depth

Measure from the front edge of the seat frame to the back rail. This is the length of the flat seating area, not including the back rest section.

Part B — Chaise back

Step 4

Choose the back cushion thickness

Select a thickness between 2 and 5 inches. The back pad can be the same thickness as the seat, or 1 inch thinner for a more reclined, relaxed feel.

Step 5

Measure the back width

Measure side to side across the back frame. This is usually the same as the seat width, but measure independently to confirm — some chaise frames taper slightly.

Step 6 — Calculation required

Calculate the back cushion height

The back pad sits on top of the seat pad, so it starts higher than the bottom of the back frame. If you order the full frame height, the back cushion will sit too high and push the seat pad forward. Subtract the seat thickness from the total frame height.

Back height (order) = Total frame height − Seat cushion thickness

Worked example

Your chaise back frame measures 24" tall. You chose a 4" thick seat pad in Step 1.

24" − 4" = Order a 20" back cushion height.

Measuring tips

The book method

Stack books on the seat frame until the height feels comfortable and clears the armrests. Measure the stack to find your ideal seat thickness before committing.

Use a rigid tape measure

A steel retractable tape gives straight, consistent readings across long spans. Avoid soft tailor's tape — it sags and causes errors on deeper frames.

Round to the nearest ½"

We produce cushions in ½" increments. Round each measurement to the nearest half-inch before entering dimensions at checkout.

Write Step 1 down first

The seat thickness from Step 1 is used again in Step 6. Note it before measuring the frame so you have it ready for the back height calculation.
