How to Design Text That Looks Good at Cushion Scale

Text on a cushion is not text on a page. A bench cushion is typically 36 to 72 inches wide and 15 to 22 inches deep. That's closer to a poster than a book. Font readability at large format follows different rules than small print.

Here's what works:

Font size: for a name or monogram, 8 to 12 inches tall is the sweet spot on a standard bench cushion. Large enough to read from across the room, not so large that it crowds the edges. For a full sentence or quote, 3 to 5 inches tall keeps it readable without overwhelming the cushion.

Font choice: sans-serif fonts (Helvetica, Futura, Montserrat) read cleanly at large scale and feel modern. Serif fonts (Garamond, Georgia, Playfair Display) feel more traditional and elegant. Script fonts (hand-lettered, calligraphy styles) add warmth but can lose readability if the letters are too thin. If you use a script font, choose one with medium-weight strokes, not hairline.

Contrast: light text on dark fabric or dark text on light fabric. Avoid medium-tone text on medium-tone fabric (gray on tan, dusty pink on beige). The text should pop without effort. Remember that sublimation can't print white, so "white text" means the base fabric color shows through. Choose a white fabric if you want white lettering.

Margins: leave at least 2 to 3 inches of empty fabric around the text on all sides. Text that runs to the edge of the cushion looks cramped and cheap. Generous margins make the same text look intentional and elegant.

Alignment: centered text works for monograms, names, and short quotes. Left-aligned works for longer phrases or multi-line text. Avoid justified text on a cushion; the uneven word spacing looks odd at large scale.

How to Create Your Design File

You don't need design software. Here are three approaches, from easiest to most polished:

2. Use Canva (free). Create a canvas sized to your cushion dimensions (e.g., 48" x 18" at 150 DPI = 7,200 x 2,700 pixels). Add your text, choose a font, adjust size and color, and export as PNG. Canva has hundreds of free fonts including classic serifs, modern sans-serifs, and hand-lettered scripts. For monograms, search "monogram" in Canva's template library for pre-designed layouts.

3. Use a monogram generator. Free tools like SunCatcher Studio's monogram maker let you enter initials, choose a frame style, and download the design as a high-resolution PNG or SVG. SVG (vector) is ideal because it scales to any cushion size without pixelating.

File format tip: for text-only designs, always export as SVG or high-resolution PNG (at least 150 DPI at the final print size). Text with thin strokes or fine serifs can look soft if the resolution is too low. Vector formats (SVG, AI, EPS) avoid this entirely because they're resolution-independent.

Which Fabric for Text Printing

The fabric texture affects how text looks. Smooth fabrics show sharper letters. Textured fabrics soften the edges.

Velvet: the smoothest surface, sharpest text. Best for monograms with thin serifs, fine script fonts, or detailed calligraphy. The slight sheen also gives text a subtle glow in certain lighting. Top choice for bedroom and living room benches.

Linen Blend: adds a natural, slightly textured look. Text edges are slightly softer than Velvet, which actually works in your favor for casual or rustic-style homes. A date printed on Linen Blend looks like it was stamped onto natural linen. Good for farmhouse, coastal, or Scandinavian interiors.

Chenille: the softest hand feel, but text appears the least crisp. Best for large, bold letters (monograms, single words) rather than long sentences or thin fonts. The texture makes the cushion feel cozy, which fits nurseries, reading nooks, and bedrooms.

Outdoor: most durable, handles cleaning and daily wear. If the bench is in an entryway, mudroom, or kid-heavy zone, Outdoor fabric keeps the text looking sharp through daily use. Slightly less vivid than Velvet but far more practical for high-traffic spots.

Not for You If

• You want embroidered text. Sublimation prints flat into the fabric. If you specifically want raised, stitched lettering with thread texture, that's embroidery, and we don't offer it. The tradeoff: embroidery is tactile but limited in color range, font variety, and size. Sublimation is flat but can print any font, any color, any scale.
• Your text has fine hairline strokes on a textured fabric. If you choose a calligraphy font with very thin lines and print it on Chenille, the texture will soften the thinnest strokes. Either switch to Velvet or choose a font with medium-weight strokes.
• You need white text on a colored fabric but the fabric isn't white. Sublimation can't print white. "White" areas show the base fabric color. For white text, you need a white fabric with the text areas left unprinted while the surrounding area is printed in a darker color (a reverse/knockout design).
